The Patient Assistance Fund at Work

Gifts to the Patient Assistance Fund at Bryn Mawr Hospital help patients and their families facing financial challenges. These funds are used to cover costs of:

- Medications, IV antibiotics, and diabetic supplies
- Hospital beds, wheelchairs, wound care kits, ostomy supplies and other medical supplies
- Nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy visits
- Car seats for newborns
- Gas or grocery gift cards
- Plane, train or bus tickets
- Transportation services for oncology or radiology appointments
- End of life services
- Assistance in cases of domestic violence
Brianna Steimer, MSW, LSW, care coordination manager, recently shared powerful stories that illustrate the direct impact of Patient Assistance Funds within the Bryn Mawr community:
- Behavioral health — An uninsured patient in need of behavioral health treatment sought medical care. Without family in the immediate area, patient assistance funds covered the cost of a train ticket and an initial supply of medications until they could be seen by a provider closer to family.
- Domestic violence — A mother of three arrived at the hospital with injuries related to domestic violence. Patient assistance funds helped provide a gas gift card so she and her children could safely reach a secure domestic violence shelter.
- Homelessness — A homeless woman with substance abuse issues came to the Emergency Department. Social workers located family willing to take her in and patient assistance funds purchased transportation to reunite her with them.
- Diabetic education — A newly diagnosed diabetic young adult without insurance benefited from five home nurse visits for diabetic education and received initial diabetic supplies through patient assistance funds.
- Refugee support — An elderly refugee from Ukraine, who came to the U.S. to live with a granddaughter, broke a hip upon arrival. Patient assistance funds provided durable medical equipment, as well as nursing and physical/occupational therapy visits in their granddaughter’s home.
A quote that resonates deeply with Brianna in her role helping others during their most vulnerable moments is from therapist Shannon Alder: “One of the most important things you can do on this earth is to let people know they are not alone.”
May this quote remind you that your gifts have a direct and tangible impact in the lives of our patients. Thank you for your continued support of Bryn Mawr Hospital.
