The Five Star Care Award

When Barbara Tachovsky was stepping down as Paoli Hospital President in 2012, she made sure to put in place a staff recognition program that would honor the exceptional work ethic and warmth that Paoli Hospital employees are known for — the Five Star Care Award.

For over a decade, patients and visitors to Paoli Hospital have been encouraged to fill out a nomination card to acknowledge individuals who made their experience memorable by being sensitive, action-oriented, trusted and relationship-driven. Managers and supervisors look forward to sharing these nominations with their staff at department meetings and unit huddles where they could further recognize their team members for their great work.

Now we've expanded access to the Five Star Care nomination process by introducing a QR code that guests and visitors can scan to fill out an online nomination form on our website. With more space to elaborate, the nominations are even more heartfelt and capture the spirit of kindness and care that our employees embody every day. Here are just a few examples from recent weeks:

A thoughtful gesture

"Shawn who works the grill in the cafeteria is a very positive, personable and considerate man. While he made my order, Shawn asked what brought me in and I told him that my mother has been here all week, then I proceeded to get a bit teary-eyed. Right then and there, he said he will pray for her — and when he goes home tonight, he and his wife will pray for her and my family. This brought real tears to my eyes and made my heart so full. I didn't know I needed to hear those words at that moment, but it meant more to me than he would know. It's the small kindnesses of the staff here that make a huge difference to the patients and their families. I am very thankful for the sincere kindness Shawn showed in that moment and wanted to be sure he heard how positively it impacted my day."

Support in the emergency department

"At the end of September we took my husband to the Emergency Department (ED). I put my kids in the car with only their underwear as we drove there. Anton, a public safety officer in the ED, helped me with my kids, getting them gowns, socks and blankets. His calmness was beyond appreciated in a stressful time for me. ED nurse Rachel not only cared for my husband but also my kids, bringing them chairs and food until someone could come pick them up. Lastly, Fred in the ED not only provided a calm atmosphere but also had humor which helped lighten a stressful situation."

Exceptional nursing care

"Karolina was an outstanding RN for me during a difficult time undergoing a catheterization of my heart arteries. She showed that she really cared about me and went out of her way to provide what I needed, be it information or medical care. We had some very difficult times communicating with my doctor and Karolina got the information I needed. She also made sure I took care after my procedure to prevent falls. She was always there when I needed help. Karolina is the type of employee I would want working in my organization. She cared, worked very hard, and ensured I was treated well in the hospital. I can't express my thanks enough for all she did for me. You have a very valuable employee in Karolina."
